Surf’s Up

Friday morning was forecast as the sunniest, warmest day of the week.  Tim and I told work we were taking the afternoon off.  It was time to surf.

We left Tofino to explore nearby Ucluelet (aka Ukee) for the morning.  Before we could play there was work to be done.  Tim was collaborating with the VM team to publish the new Ad Sales System, a project that they’d spent 9 months developing.  It went off without a hitch. We setup shop in the local favorite Cynamoka Coffee House to wrap up the last details of the week’s work before heading to Surf Junction.

This hip campground is setup for the surfers.  Here they rent boards, organize lessons and rent out their parking lot for $25 a night to vans full of surf fanatics.  The onsite hot tub and sauna are also draws after a day spent in the chilly Pacific Ocean.

A Good Week

Wrapping up a Great Week

Tim and I rented wetsuits, booties and boards and drove back up to our favorite Incinerator Rock.  We’d been eyeing up the waves here for a week.  It was time to take a turn.

C'mon Baby

C'mon Baby Let's Surf

I am not sure I’ve laughed so much on our entire trip.

Tim and I both took spectacular diggers in our quest to get on the board.  By the day’s end, Tim was able to stand up and even took some long rides in.  I never got past my knees but had a fabulous time trying.

Let's Surf

Ocean Hair

Worn out from our afternoon of paddling and heaving ourselves up on our boards, we returned to Surf Junction and celebrated the day with burgers and beers.   We’d just done battle with some Humongous Waves!

A little Fast Times Flashback:

Stu Nahan: [Spicoli is dreaming that he’s won a surfing competition] Hello everybody! I’m Stu Nahan, and I’d like you to meet this young man. His name, Jeff Spicoli. And Jeff, congratulations to you. Things looked kind of rough out there today.
Jeff Spicoli: Well, I’ll tell you Stu, I did battle some humongous waves! But you know, just like I told the guy on ABC, “Danger is my business!”
Stu Nahan: You know, a lot of people expected maybe Mark “Cutback” Davis or Bob “Jungle Death” Gerrard would take the honors this year.
Jeff Spicoli: [laughs incredulously] Those guys are fags!
Stu Nahan: [oblivious] That’s fantastic! Let me ask you a question. When you get out there, do you ever fear for your life?
Jeff Spicoli: Well Stu I’ll tell you, surfing’s not a sport, it’s a way of life, you know, a hobby. It’s a way of looking at that wave and saying, “Hey bud, let’s party!”
[focuses on Stu’s sport coat]
Jeff Spicoli: Where’d you get this jacket?
Stu Nahan: [evasive] I got this from the network. Let me ask you a question. What’s next for Jeff Spicoli?
Jeff Spicoli: Heading over to the Australian and Hawaiian internationals, and then me and Mick are going to wing on over to London and jam with the Stones!
[to the two girls next to him]
Jeff Spicoli: And you guys are invited too!

Jeff Spicoli: What Jefferson was saying was, Hey! You know, we left this England place ’cause it was bogus; so if we don’t get some cool rules ourselves – pronto – we’ll just be bogus too! Get it?
