New Years Eve, Tim learned that Dr. Harris, his family physician growing up, had passed away.
Dr. Harris’s many accomplishments are described in The Richmond Times-Dispatch so I won’t repeat them here. Instead I’ll share Tim’s memories about what it was to like to live in a small town with a great man.
“If you grew up in Blackstone, you were touched by Dr. Harris. Whether you met him through his practice, at church or in politics, he was always social, always positive, always happy to see you. He stood for everything growing up in a small town means. If you said you were going to the doctor, you meant you were going to see Dr. Harris. He sang every year at Christmas. He was the mayor for over 20 years and never rubbed anyone the wrong way. He was Mayor all my life growing up. It’s funny, back then I didn’t even know people elected mayors. I just always thought he was the mayor by divine right – he never campaigned. I am trying to remember if I ever got in trouble with him. He and his wife Fran lived right behind my grandparents. I suspect my Uncle Tom did…”
“Dr. Harris was a model citizen in a small town. A hero for me. An example for all of us.”
