Was that a Bark?

Just another Teton Sunset This morning’s sunrise wasn’t the glorious spectacle we hoped for. Instead we were greeted with London-like fog and drizzle. Low hanging clouds blocked the mountains and instead of creating a beautiful photo montage, Tim had to be contented with cooking up a tasty breakfast instead.

Though I was also disappointed by the clouds, I definitely benefited from his second choice of activity. After eggs, sausage and hashbrowns, we settled back into our road routine. I’ve missed working in Frank and it was awesome to be back. We each got our computers out and plugged through our days at the office while the rain poured.

By mid afternoon the sun broke through the clouds and with it the animals in the neighborhood poked their heads out. We were approached by 2 curious pronghorn, saw an elk about 50 yards away and could watch Jackson’s buffalo herd in the flats below our camp site. The rain didn’t seem to bother these guys at all.

Even when a band of violent thunderstorms crossed the valley, causing us break camp and temporarily abandon our exposed butte, they weren’t perturbed. After the rain and hail had stopped, we drove back up the hill and across the way our elk mate was grazing calmly.

After dinner I slipped out of the van to enjoy a moment in the great outdoors. As I walked, I heard a loud bark. I looked up and there was the elk…closer than ever. I’ve heard of bugling, I knew they mooed, but this was a bark, and not a welcoming one either. I decided our wildlife buddies had had enough of us, so I made my way back the van. I know my place, and being back in Frank isn’t so bad!
