It’s Tim and my last day in the desert for our trip, so we decided to fill it with our very favorite activities….starting with sleeping in!
By the time we woke up at 8 am, the Green Valley area was busy. Groups were climbing on the cliffs around the van, bikers were getting early rides in before the sun got too hot, and the skies were alive with all sorts of unusual aircraft. We were buzzed by mechanically propelled paragliders and homespun helicopters.
We celebrated our desert finale with Cowboy Omelet and climbed on our bikes for a spin on Bearclaw/Poppy. It was hot and hard packed but the trail is fun with lots of lips and dips. We pedalled back through town and checked out the Bloomington Petroglyphs before returning to camp just beating the noon sun.
As the temperatures rose, the winds kicked up and sand started to blow. A huge sandstorm ripped through the town, so we hunkered in the Green Valley Gap which was a little more sheltered from the winds. We set up ropes, belayed, repelled and climbed some challenging but bomber rock. It was great climbing experience. With lots of “top rope” accessilibility, no lead climbing was necessary. It’s a perfect place for Tim and I to get some more climbing experience without needing to lead climb. While we’re almost ready to take on that next challenge, a few more outings will be welcome.
We returned to camp and immediately began retrieving the few things that we’d left outside that had been blown away in the winds. Our washbins were 200 yards down the road but intact. The recovery was a small triumph.
Tonight we’ll celebrate our last road trip night with shrimp quesadillas and of course Margarita’s! We’re chilling to Carbon Leaf, Blackstone’s native and soon to be national musical sensation. We wish we could join the Weiser’s for their tequila tasting, but we’ll do our part in St. George!
