After 4 hours of sleep, Tim and I rolled over in Fruita’s Visitor Center Parking lot to a bright blue sunny day. Despite the short night, we were both refreshed by the warm air. We drove our Frank/Jeep/Bike caravan into town and got a prime spot in between the town’s hopping coffee shop and iconic bike shop – each with great wireless signals. We went into the coffee shop, bought a burrito and some coffee to justify our day’s wireless usage and went to work. Frank’s doors were open, and the sunlight was streaming in. The temperatures crept towards the 80′s and everyone on the street were sporting shorts and t-shirts. The entire town is celebrating the change of seasons.
Tim and I pulled out our own warm wear and began exposure of our pasty skin to the warm sun. The next few days may not be pretty to look at, but we’ll start getting some healthy color soon I hope!
After a very productive day of work, we drove back to one of our favorite camping spots at the base of Book Cliffs, detached the Jeep from Frank and drove the Jeep to Highline Lake. We needed a pedal around the course to see what to expect tomorrow night. Tim’s first ride during the race will start at midnight and mine at 4 am. We needed to scope things out in the daylight for preparation. I am happy to say that it’s smooth, untechnical, extremely accessible single track that will make the riding a pleasure. With just a few uphills and lots of fun downs, I think the race will be tons of fun. It will just be about pedaling!
After our ride, it was back to camp for an easy dinner under the stars and an early night. It’s time to catch up on some sleep. We’re exhausted!
