Everyone woke early this morning, with the concern of avalanche on their minds, so we decided to ski Targhee for some safer terrain. We loaded up Frank with our skis and the Bourne family gear and headed over Teton Pass in another blizzard.
At Targhee, we were treated to rock-star parking in the upper lot and casually strolled to the slopes. The temperature was rising quickly and we could see that visibility at the summit was low. On the first ride up, I knew it was going to be a struggle to see anything as our goggles immediately covered with rime ice. To further reduce visibility, we ascended into a thick cloud that gives the resort it’s nickname, Grand Fog-hee!
Our first run was deep in powder and low on visibility but Jeff, Mary Lou, Jason and Kyle all enjoyed it so much that we repeated! After Mary Lynn sat out a run to fix her contacts, we headed over to Blackfoot and spent the rest of the day running laps and finding jumps along the northern boundary of the resort. By 1:30 everyone was beat and we headed to the Trap Bar!
We ignored the signs clearly reading ‘MUST BE 21 TO ENTER’ and all of us strolled in to a perfect corner table. Kyle (17) and Jason (19) sat with their backs to the bar while Jeff, Mary Lou, Mary Lynn and I ordered beers and appetizers. Then the bouncer, posing as water boy, comes to our table with air of suspiscion just as Jason is about to sit down. He leans around, gets a good look at Kyle and immediately asks for ID. We were busted….
I didn’t know Targhee had become so strict, but nevertheless we were relegated to Pizza and beer at the new pizza parlor downstairs. While we polished off 2 pizzas, a calzone and 2 extra slices of pizza, we debated another run and then decided we were better off dry in the car. Besides…Jason reminded us, the real reason we came over the pass was a huckleberry milkshake at the Victor Emporium!
We loaded up the van and bee-lined for the obligatory stop in Victor then back over the pass and safely home. Jeff cooked another phenomenal meal and we all commenced to pack for travel tomorrow. Ann and Scott will have the house to themselves for the rest of the week as the Bourne Family flies home and Mary Lynn and I head for Tucson wedding festivities!
