Last night we’d arrived to camp well after dark. We drove across the lake bottom in disorienting blackness and camped in who-knows-where. So this morning we were excited to see where we’d ended up. We weren’t disappointed. The lake was spread out in front of us, perfectly flat. We went to work for an hour or two, but Tim was itching to take a drive.
We took Frank out to the middle and I dropped Tim off with his tripod. His instructions to me were “drive as fast as you can and make sure you stay really close so I can get the picture”…geez, well I guess it’s good to be trusted. I can’t say I drove much over 65 mph, but on a roadless stretch, that felt pretty quick. I also squeezed in just close enough without running Tim down. Fortunately Frank is photogenic no matter what he’s doing, so it worked out. El Mirage lived up to it’s name, you can see the mirage effect behind Frank as he races across the flats.
After playing on the lake, we made our way up north to San Francisco. It was an 8 hour drive with Tim behind the wheel most the way. We got to Half Moon Bay, our camp spot outside of the city just before dark. We reunited with BJ and Lisa who’d been here since the morning. Though we all still had lots of work to do, we took a break for some kite flying on the beach. BJ has an enormous kite that can lift you right off the ground in a stiff wind. We wrapped up a long day of driving by all taking turns battling the kite. As you can see it is good exercise. Check out more pictures from the 4 of us getting pushed around by the kite here!
