Today the snow kept on coming. Twin Slides slid and closed Teton Pass. The Village was blown down most the day with skiers stuck at Nick Wilson’s because the road back to town was closed. As I looked out my office windows, I couldn’t see the buildings across the street for all the snow whipping through the air. It’s huge blizzard hitting the valley. And not our first.
Maybe it’s the fact that the internet now allows everyone to express an opinion but the more snow falls the more people are talking. And the voices are angry. Local blogs talk nonstop of big “bro bra” lines, foolish decisions, and tussles on the Pass. But what I’d find interesting is a little more on respect for the mountains and the people that have to search for the skiers who choose poorly. Tonight I read Jim Stanford’s blog and appreciated his thoughts on that very topic. It was about time.
Here in Jackson, we are very lucky to have fantasticly accessible backcountry skiing. Just a ride up the pass, a short hike up Glory and you’re surrounded by limitless powder. But this accessibility opens the mountains up to everyone, no matter the skill, knowledge or preparation. And for all of us, whether it’s the first taste of Glory or the third trip up that day, a little respect goes a long way. Respect for where you are, for the people above and below you, and the people who may have to pick up the pieces when things go awry.
Thanks Jim for expressing it so well. It’s a day to appreciate the snow, to enjoy this amazing place, and to put the anger away – and yes, once the snow settles, to enjoy the results of another blizzard.
